The Hill Is the Gift

(a Manifesto)

I grew up in a place where being confused felt normal.

If I didn't understand something, I learned to keep moving.

I nodded, I guessed. I read out loud and sounded fine, even when it didn't make sense.

After a while, pretending felt safer than asking.

Providence Road and Chasing Understanding is where all that pretending stops.

This isn't a place where I rush. This isn't a place where I fake it any more.

This isn't a place where guessing gets me through, I'm done with that approach.

When a sentence is hard,

we stay.

When words don't make sense,

we notice.

When I'm confused, I'm allowed to say it.

Finally.

Nobody tells me I'm broken. Nobody gives me shortcuts. And

Nobody carries me up the hill.

Instead, I'm asked one crucial question:

Am I comfortable not understanding?

Pretending is easy. Stopping is uncomfortable, but I refuse to accept a future of 'not understanding'.

I am starting to notice when I don't get it, and ready to give a damn even when others don't.

I start to ask questions—not because I have to, but because I want to know.

That's the hill.

The hill isn't punishment. It's practicing mental toughness.

Every pause teaches me to stay. Every question takes courage.

Every hard page teaches me I don't have to hide.

I don't climb to be fast. I climb to find out. No one forces me to care. No one bribes me to try. I stay because understanding now matters.

Not grades. Not looking smart.

Understanding.

The hill is the gift.

I chose the gift.

This is Providence Road.
