The Formation

The Formation of Community

Every community is forming.

Two questions have guided our work for the past twelve years:

How does a community come to value what actually matters?

Who has the authority to confer status?

Observations

Community forms through practice, not intention.

What gets repeated in a room is what the room becomes.

Status determines what gets practiced.

Every community confers status. The question is whether it does so intentionally.

What earns respect inside the group drives everything.

Change what earns status and behavior reorganizes itself.

What is practiced forms.

The residue of repetition is formation.

Formation is indifferent to direction.

The same mechanism that forms toward courage forms toward avoidance.

A room that lets pretending pass unnamed is practicing pretending.

Ownership precedes stewardship.

People protect what they own.

Real authority given to youth will disappoint—and occasionally surprise.

Both are required.

Every institution participates in the formation of community.

Whether it intends to or not.

Obstacles

Urgency

Formation is slow. Institutions are not.

Rescue

The adult who rescues the room from discomfort rescues it from growth.

Institutional ownership

Programs belong to institutions. Formation belongs to rooms.

Stewardship

Community cannot be manufactured. It can only be cultivated.

Provide space where struggle, honesty, discomfort, and real choice are possible.

Protect those conditions against urgency, rescue, and the need to own what is working.

Every institution has a distinct role. Not the same role. The contribution only it can make.

How intentional are we about making the things that matter most visible enough to earn status?

Discover your role. Protect the conditions that make it possible.

The room that barely needs you — that is the win.

None of these observations belong to any organization.

They are observations about how human beings form one another — in rooms, over time, through what they repeatedly practice in each other's presence.

Community: build, practice, enjoy, share, protect.

Protect something together.
